HISTORY: Guide a dynasty through the centuries, ensuring the security and power of each new generation.Crusader Kings III is the heir to a long legacy of historical grand strategy experiences and arrives with a host of new ways to ensure the success of your royal house. Paradox Development Studio brings you the sequel to one of the most popular strategy games ever made. This will allow you to combine traits of your old culture and the new one, so you could raid the Indus with viking warrior monks. Or if you prefer, a foreign ruler in a far-flung land can create a hybrid culture between their own and that of the people they now rule, like Greco-Norse, Indo-Mongol, or maybe some more historically-grounded ones like Norman. You'll be able to create divergent cultures, spending prestige to mix up all of the above traits and give your new culture a custom name and map culture. Owners of the DLC will get further opportunities to play with this system. Pillars define things like what kind of clothing your culture wears, as well as their Heritage, such as Latin, which replaces the old concept of Culture Groups. ![]() Traditions, of which each culture can have up to six, are special bonuses like being better at farming in harsh terrain or allowing women to fight as knights. Your Ethos, such as bellicose or spiritual, will define the overall theme. Similarly to how religions are constructed in the base game, cultures will now consist of an Ethos, Traditions, and Pillars. Well, because the free patch coming alongside Royal Court is reworking CK3's entire culture system. Investing in your court will unlock things like new court offices, like a royal food taster to defend you against poisoning events, or a court tutor who can help you learn new languages. You will have access to multiple court types, focusing on things like learning and diplomacy. You can, of course, retire it and put it on display instead to make use of its ornamental value. Your great-great-grandmother's sword may need to be reforged, at great expense, to remain useful in combat. Even the finest sword doesn't hold its edge forever, though. That smith who was drawn to your court can be commissioned to make you a special weapon, crown, or set of regalia (no armor for now), which will go into your new inventory and can be passed down through the generations. This will allow a new way to play "tall", as a small but wealthy kingdom with a court far grander than their size would suggest can reap a lot of benefits. ![]() But the bigger your realm is, the more you'll be expected to spend to maintain appearances, and falling behind can harm your vassal relations, marriage prospects, and prestige. Spending money to increase the opulence of your court will increase a new stat called Grandeur, which can impress your vassals and attract characters like master smiths and famous poets to you. Lowly Dukes and Counts, as well as tribal rulers, will have to be content with painted 2D backgrounds for now. Kings and Emperors with feudal or clan governments will get access to the Royal Court. Taking your eyes off the map and putting them more on characters and physical locations within the world is a major departure from Paradox's usual M.O., and I think it's the bravest and most interesting path they could have taken. But going in such a different direction for the first major piece of new content seemingly speaks to a desire to lean into CK3's RPG aspects. Most of Crusader Kings 2's big expansions focused on opening up or fleshing out a specific area, and the Crusader Kings 3: Northern Lords flavor pack, released earlier this year, felt like that kind of expansion. They're also bringing back the character inventory from Crusader Kings 2: Monks and Mystics, including culture-specific weapons that will be displayed on your character and used in animated duels. Royal Court will add a new, full-screen throne room in which you can display treasures and interact with petitioners from across your kingdom. Paradox has announced the first full expansion for Crusader Kings 3, and it's going in a very different direction from its predecessor. ![]()

Wi-Fi and mobile printing: We ruled out any printers that don’t offer Wi-Fi connectivity, since we think that’s how most people print at home these days.We considered only those printers that are capable of duplex printing without human intervention, meaning models that can print on one side, suck the paper back in, and print on the other side. Automatic two-sided printing: Two-sided (duplex) printing not only reduces paper waste but also saves you money.Color pages are always more expensive, but we tried to keep the cost under 15¢ per color page. We looked for printers capable of cranking out a black-and-white page for 3¢ or less, using the most cost-effective toner. Low cost of operation: Although a low up-front price is attractive, it’s a low per-print price that’ll make the difference over the long haul.We researched more expensive models, but ultimately all such printers we tested for this guide fell under that price. Reasonable up-front cost: In general, we think people shouldn’t pay more than $300 for a color, print-only machine for use in the home.Ease of setup and use: First and foremost, a printer has to be reasonably easy to get up and running, and it shouldn’t drive you crazy when you actually need to print. If you need prints that can get wet without becoming unreadable, you need a laser printer. Toner doesn’t smear and run when it gets wet.Laser printers don’t waste toner in the same way, and because they don’t gunk up like inkjets, they may last longer before needing to be replaced. ![]() That waste isn’t reflected in the estimates manufacturers provide for how many pages you can get out of a tank. Some inkjets have a lower cost per page than home laser printers, but they also waste more ink on cleaning. They may be more economical to run in the long term. The best inkjets do a good job, but even a mediocre laser printer will do a better job delivering crisp results, especially when it comes to fine lines and small font sizes. Our laser picks can pump out as many as 27 pages per minute the fastest inkjets we’ve tested maxed out at 13 pages per minute. If you have a home office or run a home business, you may be more conscious of printer speed than those who don’t. ![]() Laser toner cartridges don’t have to be replaced as often as ink tanks, and they won’t clog-as inkjet print heads sometimes do-if you go weeks or months between print jobs.
![]() ![]() Adjust the brightness of the photo in the low ISO image so that it matches the high ISO version. If you really want to see the noise comparison of your DSLR or mirrorless camera, compare 2 exposures shot with the same aperture and exposure lengths, at high and low ISO settings. Some cameras are ISO invariant, meaning that the noise levels are the same no matter which ISO is used. While a higher ISO will produce a brighter image out of the camera by amplifying the sensor’s signal, photographs taken in low light situations (like astrophotography) using a high ISO setting will appear to have more noise in a single exposure.įor this reason, many amateur astrophotographers (myself included) prefer to take a longer exposure using a lower ISO, to compensate for the lack in brightness and create a higher quality image. If you are a beginner astrophotographer and new to photography in general, it is important to understand what ISO is and how it affects your astrophotography images.Īn example of how ISO affects the brightness of an image straight out of the camera. If you are new to astrophotography but have a daytime photography background, you likely already know what ISO is and the role it plays in the photography world. The power of image stacking and the signal-to-noise ratio at work (click to enlarge). ![]() No matter which ISO setting you use for astrophotography, stacking a series of exposures is the best way to improve the signal-to-noise ratio, and the image quality overall. If you are looking to brighten your single exposure image without using a longer exposure or a wider aperture, you can try increasing the ISO setting.īoosting the ISO setting of your camera in a low light photo taken at night may seem to drastically degrade the quality of your image (with grainy noise), but the truth is that it is not as much of a factor as you may think after several exposures have been collected. The image above illustrates how an image of the same exposure length and aperture looks using different ISO settings. If you have your heart set on understanding the complex history of ISO in photography, this article by Richard Wright is an eye-opener. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() If young people can build digital capability, the chances are they’ll be better prepared for future financial challenges that life may throw at them However, access to digital payment platforms is usually restricted to over-18s, meaning children have to piggyback on their parents’ accounts, or risk accounts being frozen if providers find out they are under 18. As a judge of the National Entrepreneur of the Year awards, Hill has been amazed at how teens make money with side hustles, using apps such as Etsy, Vinted and Depop to sell their wares. Linking adult credit cards to children’s online gaming accounts is one area where many parents have come a cropper, as children don’t know (or don’t care) that all those in-app purchases will run up big bills.Īnother important aspect of digital literacy is being able to earn money online. “If you’re not enabling these skills at an early age, the risk is they get launched into the adult world of easy credit and easy access to funds, and end up in a bad place.” “Children need to be able to operate confidently in today’s increasingly cashless society,” she says. (This could prevent a future run on pains aux raisins in the Tooting area.) “This is the way children are going to have to use money as they move into adulthood,” says Louise Hill, co-founder of GoHenry, by far the biggest “pocket money app” in the UK, with more than 1.5m accounts.įor £2.99 per month, parents can load a monthly allowance on to their child’s contactless card, see real-time notifications about what’s been spent, how much is left, and even restrict where they can spend the money. So how do we prepare them? If parents are willing and able to pay, there are an array of services offering apps, and pre-paid contactless cards for children as young as six. They also knew an awful lot about crypto - as FT columnist-turned-teacher Lucy Kellaway has also found with her students - not to mention gambling and “ buy now pay later”, even though you have to be over 18 (legally) to do any of these. When I visited a school in Manchester this summer, an alarmingly high number of 14-year-olds said they had received requests to be a “money mule” via social media platforms. Equally, young people need a “safe space” in which to try it out. ![]() Online banking hands young people the keys to a digital kingdom they may simply not be prepared for. It’s understandable that parents want oversight. Yet Stuart Haire, head of retail banking and wealth management for HSBC UK, recently told me he gets way more requests from parents asking to disable the contactless feature on their child’s card rather than lower the age limit. When you consider all the other things much younger children are already doing online by then, these age limits seem increasingly out of step.Ĭlaer Barrett’s two-year-old niece gets to grips with a pain aux raisins - after having tapped Claer’s bank card to pay for it Some restrict contactless cards and online banking to over-13s or over-16s. You have to be at least 11 years old to open a current account at the great majority of UK banks. The future of finance is clearly digital - but younger children cannot learn how to manage the dangers or opportunities if they don’t have access to digital tools. Today, there are very few places (in central London, at least) where children can spend small amounts of their own money.Īll of this has got me thinking about financial literacy and the role that digital literacy plays within this. When my brother and I were their age, we hoarded coins to buy penny sweets in the local post office. Likewise, the piggy banks I bought for her five-year-old twin brothers are gathering dust on the shelf. Since Covid-19, plenty of businesses have gone cashless, and I buy nearly everything online. Even if I gave my niece some coins to help her learn the value of money, there’s another problem. ![]() ![]() ![]() "The FPC enables people (across the United States) to do these things," Keeler said, noting that the FPC's assistance also is private and confidential. ![]() They have a passion for sports and active living.
